Online attention spans are short, keep videos interestinging!!!

Posted by camthecameraman in WebsiteVideo EditingOnlineFilesEncodingBranding

Phones and ModemsThis article by Phil Cooke confirms what I have experienced with creating video for the online and mobile market.  Attention spans are shorter online.  You need to grab your audience early and keep the video interesting so people wont click away.

Online image editing using Picnik.com

Posted by camthecameraman in GraphicsFiles

picnik.comI write this blog from a number of locations.  I have been stuck in front of a another computer away from my main 2 machines, my office machine and my home machine, with time to kill and blogs to write.  I like to try and finish an article if possible so when I get back to my main machines I can get back to whatever work I need to do there.  As such I have had to set up some procedures so that I can work effectively on this new blog while away from home base as it were.

One techique I have used is to store high quality versions of all files I might need in a hidden folder on my site so that I can easily adapt any images on the go or add them to my various social media sites.  I also had to find a quick and easy online image editing application.  I found www.picnik.com

Branding of your website - my experience

Posted by camthecameraman in WebsiteOnlineBranding

camthecameramanI revamped this website in November 2008 after owning the domain for over 4 years and having a pretty crappy Joomla site here for most of that time. I always thought I would "get around to it" at some stage. I never did.  Recently though I started working on three other sites (www.dailydevotions.com.au, www.theclique.tv and southmorang.nccc.org.au)and felt that it was time to spend a bit of that time and acquired knowledge on my own personal site.

I must admit that the idea of possibly earning a few adwords dollars and building my personal brand did cross my mind but as I have got into it, I have found that I actually enjoy the writing side of it. I recognise that people may not enjoy reading what I have to write but that kinda isn't the point at the moment. I am enjoying creating this site and hopefully, in time, there will be a repository of my knowledge that may benefit someone else.

A Marathon Marketing Mistake - Dont Spam people with offering services you dont use yourself!!

Posted by camthecameraman in SpamSEOMarketingEmail

Bad Marketing CompanyMy mother works at a major supplier of mountain bread here in Melbourne Australia, she sits on the end of the sales@ email address and as such gets a mix of legitimate and spam mail.  Knowing my interest in SEO she forwarded me this email.

Spamming Marketing Company :: Marathon Marketing

Now I think there is something highly ironic about a company offering SEO services and guaranteeing to get top position "in major search engines" that 1. doesn't have a website itself, 2. doesn't even rank for their own company name (thats not rocket science, I have ranked number one for camthecameraman for over 3 years!! and I make no big claims about that no one else is even trying) and 3 they promise to "evaluate your site for free" and havent even checked to see that the Mountain Bread Company does indeed rank top spot for the phrase "mountain bread" in its local google search and number 2 in google worldwide.

Watch YouTube in widescreen.

Posted by camthecameraman in YouTubeWidescreen16x9

YouTubeWatching Jim Stewart's vlog today on YouTube I saw that it was displayed in widescreen.  Jim has for a number of months, maybe years, recorded in widescreen or 16x9 format but has had YouTube pop black bars at the top and bottom (letterbox) his pictures.  Clearly YouTube is catching up with the new world of 16x9.

I saw this article in the age online to confirm that YouTube is indeed going to offer widescreen viewing from now on.  This is also confirmed on YouTube's Blog. This will be a bonus to those people who love watching videos online on their spiffy new widescreen laptops or home plasmas and LCD's.

Video Conversions Melbourne - Update

Posted by camthecameraman in SEOOnlineAdwordsAdsense

Internet I mentioned in my post of less than a week ago that I felt some companies were missing their opportunities with organic search.  I wrote about the search phrase Video Conversions Melbourne, and I said I would update you on the response in google to my articles.

Google Search for Video Conversions Melbourne :: 24th November 2008

Well today when I checked this site ranked third for that phrase despite the fact that I do not offer any video conversion services (well actually I can reccomend a few companies but thats not the point).  The company All Type Video Conversions still has the most prominant entry due to their free listing on Google Maps despite the fact they dont have a website that I can find.  Black Dog Enterprises are still paying for ads, interestingly this company doesnt even rank for the phrase "black dog" so they are almost invisble to google search  for these two key phrases related to their business.  I am sure google adwords dont mind being paid by them though.

Statistics Packages for a Joomla 1.5 site

Posted by camthecameraman in StatisticsJoomla 1.5Joomla

OnlineSetting this site up has been very enlightening on a number of fronts.  I have previously worked on my wifes site www.dailydevotions.com.au building that in Joomla 1.0.  I used an excellent stats package there called JoomlaStats along with the obligitory  Google Analytics.  I cannot find  a component that comes close to the functionality of JoomlaStats for 1.5.  Unfortunately the 1.5 version is due Q2 2009 according to their site.

On another site I even tried using JoomlaStats in Legacy mode but it cause the site to crash.  I didnt pursue it.  Shame really, my mate Jim Stewart reminded me the other day that one of the benefits of JoomlaStats was its ability to tell you when bots came past for scrape, very handy when building (or re-building in this case) a new site.  I have missed it as I try to build an audience etc.  I am currently using Google Analytics and JoomlaWatch, not 100% happy, mainly cause I need some of their code on my site which displays a little icon at the bottom.

I would like to try Woopra and have applied but as its in beta I may have to wait, I will also look at Counter.GD joomla counter & stats in time.

Using Twitter

Posted by camthecameraman in twitterOnlinemicroblogging

KeyboardI have been using Twitter for the last few months and I must say it is fun to watch people and see what is going on.  I also search twitter posts for questions that I can answer here.

If all has gone well this post will have automatically appeared in my twitter feed as I have been trying a Joomla plugin called  Twitter Status.  I will try this out for a time and see how I like it.  I will also be experiementing with putting my feed on the home part of my website too.

Update: I have just found out that Twitter Status doesnt work with the latest version of Joomla, I have uninstalled it and will try it again at some time soon
