Tech Novelty - Kent ShafferPosted by camthecameraman in Design, Adobe Photoshop |

I really like what Kent has to say generally and he has some great insights into media and human behaviour. He writes an interesting article about Tech Novelty, where he uses Photoshop as an example.
He states that Tech Novelty is:
Being blinded by the novelty of an exciting new technology and consequently misusing the technology for novelty's sake. Misuse of technology may be caused by lack of training and/or from the inability to focus on anything except the novelty.
I remember when a product came out by Canopus called DV Storm, it was an awesome realtime Mini DV editing solution, allowed you to work in "real time" no rendering for your DV projects in Adobe Premiere 6.0. Fantastic!! The problem was the amount of tech novelty effects that it also came bundled with. Lots of love hearts (in 3D) and all sorts of other garbage. As a salesman at the time I found it really hard to sell on these points, sure they were real time and easy to demonstrate but the real tools you needed still required rendering. Dont demonstrate them the reps said.
People lapped up the effects and the wedding market went nuts for them, I hated them!! They were a classic example of Tech Novelty.
Do you have any examples of tech novelty, stuff that is used because it is there?
