Video Editing Tip - Data Management

Posted by camthecameraman in Final Cut ProAvid Media ComposerAdobe Premiere ProAdobe CS3Adobe

FoldersI have a “skeleton” directory on my edit machine that contains all the folders and files I would use in a typical project this way it is easy to find files when I come back to a project after a period of time. Mine looks something like this:

AA - Video Folders

-      Project Files

-      DVD Files

-      Non-timecode Files

-      Graphics

-      Titles

-      Audio

-      Timecode Files

I replace the root directory with a project name, I often create a new directory for each digitized tape in the “timecode files” directory to make deleting individual tapes easier. This system ensures you can easily back up only necessary files by deleting all timecoded files then back up the remaining directories.

I have seen much more extensive versions of this structure sometimes even numbering folders to ensure they fall in order of priority.  Obviously the more advanced editing and the more editing packages you use for animation audio sweetening etc will have an effect on this.
