Watch YouTube in widescreen.

Posted by camthecameraman in YouTubeWidescreen16x9

YouTubeWatching Jim Stewart's vlog today on YouTube I saw that it was displayed in widescreen.  Jim has for a number of months, maybe years, recorded in widescreen or 16x9 format but has had YouTube pop black bars at the top and bottom (letterbox) his pictures.  Clearly YouTube is catching up with the new world of 16x9.

I saw this article in the age online to confirm that YouTube is indeed going to offer widescreen viewing from now on.  This is also confirmed on YouTube's Blog. This will be a bonus to those people who love watching videos online on their spiffy new widescreen laptops or home plasmas and LCD's.

It has always interested me that the USA is so far behind on this issue, NBA basketball highlights on TV here in Australia are nearly always 4x3 for instance. Surely the NBA has enough money and interest in its brand to ensure that all games are shot and distributed in 16x9.  I remember 5 or 6 years ago being told here that networks here in Australia wouldn't even consider 4x3 programs anymore and I cant remember the last job I did that was shot in 4x3.  I have finished in 4x3 recently but only for projects that will appear on the web and YouTube.

Why do you think it is that the US has lagged behind the standards being set here in Australia, is it that Australia is an early adopter or is it more related to the size of the market in the US and changing over takes a bit longer?  I suspect it is a bit of a combination of both.  Let me know what you think by leaving a comment
